Immortal Island

Andaman and Nicobar islands are one of India's treasure and valuable, historical, cultural, geographic, natural, scenic, asset. Visiting such a place is greatest, awesome, exciting feeling. It was my first trip to an island. The place was cool and serenity. The climate is so composed with tranquility.

On December 20th, It's around 4:50PM, I visited the  perilous, treacherous, vicious, meticulously planned "The Cellular Jail" in Port Blair. The moment I entered into the Jail, to the right and left side there are loads of information about the deadly island, about the freedom fighters, and about the Jail. There are few pictures of Freedom Fighters, we are fortunate to see few of freedom fighters pictures.

I have entered into the right side of the room, watching the photos randomly and checking out the pictures with some content.
I have come to know, the meaning of Kalapani.I was aware of Pani=water, but not Kala. Kal as per sanskrit 'Time or Death',
so kalapani=a place of death or water of death.
In General, people say, will go to two places after death, i.e. heaven and hell.
But, before 1942, hell was before death and i.e. Kalapani. Our greatest freedom fighters filled the place of hell to save us and
gave heaven to enjoy our greatest nation called India. We should never ever degrade, spoil, insult our nation irrespective of whatever the circumstances. We need to fight within ourselves on the problems we are facing in our nation. BUT NEVER DAMAGE THE COUNTRY.

Interestingly, Till I read one of the portrait, which tells that most of the Burmese people also
accompanied with Indians in this jail. In short, those who escaped Death penalty in India and Burma, will be moved to Port Blair.
Kalapani is the transportation to the penal settlements beyond the sea. As many of who are reading the article, specially movie freaks, would have stricken by "Kalapani" movie by great director Priyadarshan and greatest performance by Mohanlal, Prabhu,Tabu, Savarkar role Annukapoor,Ram Lakhan role by Tinnu Anand, Dr. Len Hetton role, David Barry and  Amrishpuri as Mirza Khan.
Those who didn't watch, Please watch it. In Hindi, Amitabh Bachan bought the rights to dub the movie Saaz-E-kalapani(Info from Wikipedia)

After reading every portrait, and there sacrifices and history. It make your blood boil, goosebumps, as usual with patriotic emotion, above all uttermost respect. Not just the time you stay with pictures, every time you realize the happiness of we are enjoying right now. Every time you say proudly "Indian", Every time you respect your national flag. Every time you watch or listen patriotic movies or songs, Every time on Independence day. Yes, its only on those times, but we need to have true respect and love towards nation in heart and who gave such nation to us i.e. freedom fighters and Indian Revolutionists. We love our parents. Not every second, everyday you will not show affection and love towards them or everyday you will not say "I love you parents" .Those are within us, it erupts only in few situations and always remains in heart. The same applies with Patriotism.

Moving ahead to the next portrait, I found that initially first attempt to colonize these islands was made in year 1789 by Archibald Blair. this settlement was later moved to Port Cornwallis in north Andaman, which was closed in the year 1796. That is how it got the name "Port Blair"

The Penal settlement was actually established on the year 1858. Yes, that's because of first revolt for Independence 1857 in order to detach them from the motherland, family, friends, happiness, and most importantly to wipe there existence. Precisely, going to hell. I will not dig history, which we can get from textbooks, google, internet. So will stop giving the facts indeed will stress on the feelings and emotions an Indian went through.

Came out of the room, and took left turn to read more about our great forefathers.
Walking in the room, staring and witnessing the greatest people India ever had. Saw Baba bahan singh, Kaur Singh,Gopal Krishana, Mir Alam,Sher singh, azal hussain. Most of them who participated are from Lahore conspiracy case.
came across the name Mahavir Singh freedom fighter who was bought in the lahore case . Indu Bhushan Roy, from Alipore bomb case, he was a mental and physical wreck person because of the tortures and sadistic treatment of David Barry. Watched Ram lakhan picture, Remember, Tinnu Anand role in Kalapani, He played Ram Lakhan, one of the freedom fighter there are no words or expression or one cannot explain in any language, to explain the way David Barry and Mirza khan the jail warden treated him by brutal force feeding process. He was feeded with human excreta. It is uncontrollable, I don't know how to write it cannot even devise such a brutal act, its beyond killing.

Why he/they should go to Port Blair? Why he/they need to stand for India? Why they left their family? Why such great freedom fighters should sacrifice unmeasurable unquantified amount of sacrifices selfless love towards nation. They all did for our future without expecting anything rebound for themselves rather Independence.  I used to think there only two people selfless, unconditional human beings, those are parents .But, I felt there was and I believe there are few in current generation too who are selfless and proud Indians. Example, Abdul kalam.

Finally, out of the two rooms which taught a lot about history and true patriotism. Saw "swathantra jyoti" and looked straight . Covered with triangular shaped walls filled with jail rooms and in center
saw horrible statue of man made to depict the tortures faced by prisoners.

If any prisoner tries to escape, or go against to officers, done any kind of mistake, they would be
punished ruthlessly and bought in front of court and judge will order 50,100,200..etc count of whip .
Officers would increase it till they get tired not the prisoner. Also, found that statue of prisoners to depict tasks like cutting trees and chopping wood, and working at the oil mill under regimental strictness under unbearable conditions. Kolhu-The oil grinding, most difficult and hardest work which caused the death of some.

Saw the direction to Gallows, the only place I found pin drop silence and no one took any kind of pose or no newly married couples at this place. Everyone witnessed the silence and amount of pain they went to fill our happiness.
Gallows
The amount of altruism for future sons. The amount of love to share for next generations. The amount of pride to give every Indian. The amount of courage to spread for every Indian. The amount of immolate to remember by every Indian.

Entered into the jail corridors. Took second floor, the last room to witness one of the great freedom fighter named "Savarkar". First saw this name when I landed in Port Blair, the airport is named after his name. His full name is Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
Below is the pic. He is one of the educated and revolutionist with consistent effort and fuel to increase patriotism in everyone. He participated and lead many hunger strikes in the jail.

Every wall you touch and every part of the place is filled with patriotism. Moved to top of the cellular jail to see the island. There was an island not so far from cellular Jail, After zoom in lens, figured out it as ROSS island. Mostly with Red color. The place were Britishers enjoyed there stay, so  that they won't hear the tortures or patriotic slogans every day. They have constructed in beautiful for there luxurious stay.  It is named after Sir Daniel Ross British marine surveyor. It is known
as Paris of the east. I saw mineral water plant, tennis-court,swimming pool etc. The Administrative HQ of the British in the Andaman and Nicobar islands were established at Ross Island and therefore it became the citadel of British power.

Before we walked out of the jail, we and most of the people also attended the light show about cellular jail. It gave brief description about life in cellular jail, tortures by David Barry and Mirz Khan. I remember a scene from the movie, Govardhan character played by Mohanlal, licking Mirza Khan (Amirsh puri) boots, I saw this scene when I was kid. Those were few things which imprinted in my mind about the freedom fighters and there struggle to save us.

I was outside of the jail and clicking pictures, but my mind was inside for a while. I have with me one of the greatest memories of eye-witnessing the sacred place Port Blair of great sacrifices for independent India in the Immortal island called Andaman and Nicobar islands. Please visit this place with utter most respect and proud Indian.

We don't have any right to scold, defame, degrade, damage the nation. They (Freedom Fighters) have all those rights who faced inexpressible, unimaginable, tortures of life hood. Our duty is to protect what they gave, nothing else.

  8. Avinash,
We have visited Andaman in 2011. Every word you wrote is true. Everyone who visit it will visualize the unbearable and inhuman torture and treatment borne by our freedom fighters. The power is the source of brutality. I suggest one to finish site seeing first and visit jails later. One will return with strong memories of freedom fighters.
The way you wrote is great presentation of facts.
